Scrapbooking preserves your memories

Getting Started in Scrapbooking

Scrapbooking seems to have become the rage for those of us wishing to preserve our memories in an artistic, creative, imaginative way.  For those who are just getting started in scrapbooking, there are so many supplies, classes and instructional books available that getting started may seem overwhelming, and maybe even intimidating in some ways.

That doesn't need to be the case.  Before you pull your hair out in frustration, follow a few simple guidelines.  It is easy to purchase the right supplies, create memorable pages and finish a scrapbook that preserves memories for generations.  To ensure your hard work is long lasting, make sure you buy items that are archival quality (meaning that it is acid free so that the items in the album aren’t damaged or ruined over time) and are photo safe.  There are a few stores that I have gone to to purchase scrapbooking items. One store that has a large selection of scrapbooking supplies is  Scrapbooking With Jo-Ann.com.

One would think that the first item needed is a scrapbook.  Not necessarily true.  Choose the pictures and memorabilia that you plan to use to help you determine the size of scrapbook you might need.  When I decide what to put in my scrapbooks, I try to limit my self to a certain number of pictures that I will use per theme or event.  Unfortunately, I very seldom stick to that rule because while I am working, I will come up with different or new ideas that will change the items that I thought I would use on a particular page.

Choosing Scrapbooking Supplies

The following is a list of items you might need for your scrapbook project.

Scrapbooking Albums, thankfully, aren’t limited to just one particular size, shape or color.  There are so many varieties out there to choose from that at times it’s hard to make a decision.  I try to envision what I want the outside to look like before I shop for an album.  That doesn’t always help, but at times, I will get lucky and find the perfect one.   I always try to buy one that will allow me to add pages as needed.

Page protectors are needed for the album pages.  Some pages already have them included.   Always make sure to buy the correct size, because some of the sheets are slightly different in sizes.  That’s probably common sense for most individuals, but just ask me how I know.

Decorative papers of all kinds are available that will complement your photos and memorabilia.   They are sold in packs or individually.

Photo safe pens - buy at least one black along with any other colors that you would like to use.

A paper cutter - there are several good small table-top paper cutters that are available just for scrapbooking.

Scissors need to be sharp for a straight edge pair.  There are a variety of  scissors that you can buy that cut decorative borders.

Adhesive is important if you want all your hard work to remain permanently fixed.  There are quite a few to choose from, and your decision comes down to personal preference.  Make sure that whatever you choose is acid free, photo safe, and non-toxic, otherwise it may damage or ruin your work.

These are the basic items needed to begin an album.  Any of the above items are easily found in stores or online.  Just make sure you buy acid free, photo safe, and archival quality items for life long preservation.

Now get ready to get scrapping!
